We should thank Vinton Cerf and Bob Kahn because they changed our lives and the way we think. Even for this blog, I am thankful to them because they are the ones who are credited for the invention of the Internet.
“Roti, Kapda aur Makaan” is just incomplete without “Internet”. And the internet has become a necessity for our life. Life without the internet is like a nightmare and slow internet sometimes puts us all through.
Due to COVID-19, our whole system has become dependent on the internet from Work From Home-WFH, online schooling, shopping to even learning new skills (especially cooking).
Have you ever felt during these days that our internet is expensive or slow? If these thoughts have ever crossed your mind then you are right. Based on data from Cable.co.uk and Speedtest, I’ve collated data on internet speeds on a global level both internet service for mobile data & broadband and how much it costs in USD ($) per month in approx 200 countries.
What are the requirements for affordable and high speed internet?
This point doesn’t require much analysis to answer because when discussing the observation all the points are self-explanatory. It also considers the below-mentioned factors also:
- Investment by the country to build a strong infrastructure
- Country economy (developed or developing or poor)
- Country policy
- Country geographical conditions
- Availability and proximaity to submarine cable
Where does India stand?
India is not the one with the cheapest or slowest broadband or mobile data speed in the world. However, in some cases, our neighbouring countries have better internet speed and cheaper rates.
Broadband:
- India ranks 71th out of 181 countries in the broadband speed
- India’s broadband speed is 66.65 Mbps, compared to China who has a broadband speed is 202.31 and is ranked 14th, our broadband speed is really slow
- India has fairly cheaper broadband rate and is 20th out of 211 countries
- In India average broadband cost for month is $13.58 however our neigbouring counrties Nepal ($13.35/month), Sri Lanka ($9.58/month) and Bhutan ($8.71/month)
- If we want to speed up like China then we would have to shell-out only $12.26/month
Mobile Data:
- India ranks 122nd out of 141 countries in mobile data speed
- India’s mobile data speed is 18.98 Mbps compared our other neigbours we are only better than Sri Lanka (17.69 Mbps) and Bangladesh (13.34 Mbps). Even Pakistan (20.92 Mbps) has beeter speed comapred to India. China has speed of 168.28 Mbps and in Top 10 countries with highest speed.
- India had fairly cheaper mobile data rate for 1 GB data and is 28th out of 230 countries
- In India average mobile data cost for 1GB a month is $0.68 and our neigbouring counrties Nepal ($0.62/month), Pakistan ($0.59/month) and Sri Lanka ($0.38/month)
- If we want a speed like China than we would have to shell-out only $0.52/month
Conclusion
If we are talking about speed vs cost, then India should still look into its policies or technology or infrastructure.
- Monaco has the highest broadband speed of 270.25 Mbps which cost $37.61/month
- Slowest broadband speed is of Turkmenistant which is 3.91 Mbps and for this speed it cost a mamoth of $164.48/month
- For mobile data speed 1st rank holder is United Arab Emirates (U.A.E) which is 273.87 Mbps shell-out $7.62/month for 1 GB data
- Palestine has slowest mobile data 1 GB data of 7.66 Mbps which cost $1.71/month
