Deaths due to suicide is one of the main reasons globally, approximately 8,00,000 cases in the world. This is an underestimated number due to the stigma associated with suicide and legal complications.
India’s contribution towards suicides globally is approx. 17%. According to the Government of India report 2019 (source: National Crime Records Bureau), 139123 cases registered.
According to the data, suicide cases have witnessed continuous growth. In the last decade, suicide case recorded has witnessed a growth of approx. 8.6%.
When we analysis the suicide causes for the year 2015 to 2019, family problem has been the top cause in India.
From the table below, it’s clear that the top 5 causes for suicide have been constant. Other than the causes not known, all other causes can be addressed through a proper awareness program.

Maharashtra is the state which has registered highest number of suicide cases, followed by Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.
Observations
- Family Problem is the main reason for suicide which contribute approx. 32.4% of cases in India
- Counselling is considered a stigma in India even the educated population refuses to understand the importance of counselling
- Suicide is considered a stigma to the family, hence people try to record the cases under different causes of death
- Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal contribute approx. 50% of suicide cases in India
- This large issue is addressed only when a celebrity succumbs to suicide.
