World Happiness in 2021

The Cambridge dictionary defines happiness as “the feeling of being pleased.” So, what makes us happy is it money, education, food, housing, or a combination of all things.

Roti, Kapda aur Makaan is just a saying because happiness is not limited to internal factors however external factors also play an important role. According to the World Happiness Report 2021, happiness is a factor of both individual and country growth and stability.

How is Happiness calculated?

Let’s start with a look at the criterias that are utilised to compute global happiness levels. Health and wealth are two clear markers, both of which have been gradually rising over the world. These are taken into account in the study, with GDP per capita and life expectancy at birth weighted into the scores.

It also considers the below-mentioned factors also:

  • Social support
  • Freedom to make life choices
  • Generosity
  • Corruption Perception
  • Positive and Negative affects due to your experience or emotions

This year COVID-19 factor was also considered as it has affected our physical and emotional well-being. And as we understand that the above factors also play a vital role in the happiness score calculation.

Where does India stand?

India is ranked 139 out of 149 countries in the 2021 report. However, India has shown improvement in its ranking from the past. India still remains an unhappy country in the Asian continent and just above Afghanistan and Yemen. India has shown great improvement towards the accessibility of basic services.

  • New Zealand is the only country other than countries from Europe in top 10 ranking
